Most Digital Video Recorders have 4, 8, 16 and 32 camera inputs. If you own a 4 camera DVR and want to add a 5th camera you would need to upgrade to an 8 camera unit. Recently we received a call from one of our customers who owns an apartment building in Beverly Hills. She had an 8 channel DVR with 5 cameras already installed. She was having a problem with cars being vandalized and thought that the perpetrators were following the tenants through the parking gate as they entered the property. Once we played back the video from the driveway gate camera we saw she was correct. We added an infrared license plate camera to log all of the cars entering the property. So once we had the license plate logged, and than viewed the other wide angle infrared bullet cameras we had concrete proof to give to the police. But the real moral of the story is, sometimes its better to buy a DVR with a larger camera capability for the future. It will save you money in the long run. Some people like to troubleshoot their video security system before calling a service tech. If a camera is not showing up on the monitor, first make sure its plugged in. Each camera has its own transformer and it should be warm to the touch. If there is still no picture you can take the video cable from the DVR and plug it in directly to the monitor and if you get a picture that would mean the input is faulty on the DVR. Make sure the video camera connector is tight and secure on the cable. Play back the recorded video on your DVR and see what time the camera went out. One time we did a service call at an apartment building in West Hollywood and after playing back the video we found that the camera had been stolen! The good news was that we recorded a great face shot of the thief,down loaded the image to a thumb drive and gave it to the police. We completed 2 homes last week, one in Ontairo, the other in Riverside. Both had nanny cameras installed in smoke detectors and motion detectors. Smoke detector and motion detector cameras are a great way to covertly watch your children and nannys while you are at work. The cameras are installed with no video cable visable and are recorded on a Digital Video Recorder. The DVR will only record when there is motion in the room, making searches easy. Our tech did 3 service calls to different cities on Tuesday. The first stop was in Oxnard to replace a 20″ LCD monitor. Than out to Los Angeles to replace 2 power supplies at an apartment building. The power supplies were for 2 color vandal proof domes with infrared lights. Then over to Chatsworth to replace a Panasonic color camera that had been installed 9 years ago. We replaced it with a Sony EX- View color camera and 2.8-12MM lens. We service cites from Santa Maria to Riverside and from Palmdale to Irvine.
